CQS on Reddit: What It Is, How to See Your Tier, and How to Raise It

Contributor Quality Score, or CQS, is Reddit’s hidden rating of how trustworthy an account appears. Reddit bases it on past account actions, network and location information, and account security signals. The result is one of five tiers that Reddit and subreddit moderators can use to filter posts and comments.

You will not find your CQS in your profile or account settings. Most people only discover it after a post says it was “Removed by Reddit’s filters,” or their comments keep getting held.

CQS is not the same as karma. Karma is the visible result of votes. CQS is a wider trust judgment based on how the account has been used and secured. An account can have high karma and a low CQS. Another account may have modest karma but a clean record and a stronger tier.

Subreddit karma rules and CQS filters are also separate gates. Passing one does not mean you will pass the other.

Reddit explains the main signals in its official Contributor Quality Score guide, although that page is mainly written for moderators.

CQS applies across your account, not just inside one subreddit. Since account actions form part of the score, trouble in one community may affect how you are treated elsewhere.

Reddit made CQS available to communities in September 2023 after testing it. Reddit reported fewer removals being reversed than with basic karma and account-age rules. That helps explain why many large communities now use it.

What the five Reddit CQS tiers mean

CQS tier What it means in practice
Lowest Often held or removed where CQS filtering is active. The account may look like probable spam, but it is not automatically banned.
Low Contributions may be held for review or removed by stricter filters.
Moderate The useful baseline. This tier passes many common CQS filters.
High The account is considered more trusted and is seldom stopped by CQS alone.
Highest Rarely affected by CQS filters. It may also pass some age or karma gates when moderators set their rules that way.

New accounts normally start in the lower tiers. Their score then changes as they build history.

Reddit’s examples often filter accounts below Moderate or focus only on Lowest accounts. Some communities combine this with a subreddit-karma rule. That makes Moderate the first practical goal. High is where the account is more likely to be left alone.

Each subreddit chooses its own settings. The same account can post without trouble in one community and be held in another.

How to check your Reddit CQS

Reddit does not give users a CQS meter. The closest thing to a direct result is a reply from AutoModerator in a community set up to show the tier.

  1. Go to r/WhatIsMyCQS.
  2. Read its current posting or command rules.
  3. Make the requested post.
  4. Wait for the automated reply naming your tier.

The reply usually appears within moments. If nothing happens, check that your post follows the community’s required format. The checking community is not an official Reddit feature and may sometimes stop working, but its reply uses the CQS tier available to AutoModerator.

Be careful with websites claiming to provide an exact score from a username. Reddit exposes CQS to AutoModerator, not ordinary bots or the public API. A public checker must estimate the result from visible account details or send the check through a subreddit-based system.

Estimates can help when reviewing an account you do not control. For your own account, the AutoModerator result is stronger. Entering a public username does not expose private Reddit details such as the password, email address or phone number.

Is CQS causing your Reddit problem?

CQS can affect posts and comments in communities using CQS rules. It also supports Reddit’s reputation filter and may affect chat, message and community-invite limits. It could influence how confidently Reddit shows content in feeds, but Reddit has not fully explained that part.

A low CQS restricts an account. It does not stop you from browsing or voting, and it is not the same as a ban.

What you see What it usually means What to do
“Removed by Reddit’s filters.” Reddit’s reputation filter may have stopped the post. Communities can set this filter at different levels, and CQS is a major signal. Do not keep reposting the same content. Ask the moderators for approval, then work on the account’s record.
Chats, DMs or invites vanish or reach a limit. These may be account-reputation limits. They can loosen as the account gains trust. Stop sending messages in bulk and use the account normally. There is no separate user appeal for these limits.
You cannot follow more people. If you followed many accounts quickly, this is usually an action rate limit rather than CQS. Wait for the limit to end and stop mass following.
Nothing appears anywhere. If posts are missing even from your profile when viewed while logged out, you may have a shadowban or suspension. Use Reddit’s appeal page to check the account’s status and appeal if the option is available.

With low CQS, some communities will normally still let you post while others hold or remove your work. A shadowban or suspension has a wider effect.

What changes CQS?

Reddit names three broad signal groups:

  • Past actions taken on the account.
  • Network and location information.
  • Account security signals, including verification.

Reddit does not publish the formula, scoring weights or exact thresholds. It says CQS updates regularly and can move up or down.

Users and moderators report some common patterns. Removals, reports, bans, suspensions and repeated downvoted comments may hurt. So can bursts of posting, repeated links, karma-farming communities and activity focused almost entirely on one subreddit.

Useful comments that receive real replies and upvotes appear to help. Normal activity across several relevant communities and a secured, verified account also tend to support recovery.

Reddit has not said that CQS judges specific opinions or subjects. What matters is often the reaction: reports, removals, downvotes and moderator action can all become negative account history.

Your CQS may be low because:

  • The account is new and has little clean history.
  • Its email or phone is not verified.
  • Several posts or comments were removed.
  • Comments were often downvoted or collapsed.
  • The account recently received a ban or site-wide suspension.
  • It uses a VPN or shared connection linked to abusive accounts.
  • Most of its karma came from farming communities.

Account age and total karma cannot repair CQS on their own. An old but dormant account with a poor history can remain Low. A suspension may cause a sharp drop and often calls for a longer period of clean use afterward.

Can a VPN lower CQS?

A VPN is not automatically against Reddit’s rules. The problem is that shared VPN addresses are often used by spammers. Fast changes between countries can also look unusual.

For an account that matters, a steady home or mobile connection is the safer choice. If your tier dropped after heavy VPN use, stop using that VPN for the account, continue with normal activity and check again after several weeks.

Do alternate accounts have lower CQS?

Reddit says alternate accounts are not automatically treated as low quality. The risk comes from how they are used.

Ban evasion, coordinated voting and posting the same links through several accounts can harm those accounts or get them banned. Accounts on the same connection may also become associated, so harmful activity on one can put the others at risk.

CQS Checklist: How to Increase Reddit CQS Fast

“Fast” still means building trust over weeks, not trying to force a change in two days. This is the safest order to follow:

  1. Secure the account. Verify its email. Add a real, non-VoIP phone number where appropriate. Security is one of the signal groups Reddit confirms it uses.
  2. Use a steady connection. Stop switching between unstable VPNs, shared proxies and fast-changing locations.
  3. Avoid new removals. Read each community’s rules before posting. One good contribution is worth more than ten posts that get filtered.
  4. Comment before posting. Leave useful comments that answer questions or add real detail. Genuine replies and upvotes create a healthier record.
  5. Slow down. Stop mass following, repeated links and bursts of similar posts.
  6. Earn karma normally. Do not use karma farms, bought votes or coordinated voting. Visible karma gained through bad patterns does not create trust.
  7. Start where comments are welcome. Larger general communities often give newer accounts more room to comment. Sorting by New can help you find questions before the discussion becomes crowded.
  8. Use several relevant communities. Join a handful that truly fit the account’s interests instead of making every action look tied to one goal.
  9. Choose quality over volume. A few comments that people value are better than dozens of short, ignored replies.

Reddit gives no recovery schedule. With verification, normal activity and no fresh removals, an account may begin moving toward Moderate over several weeks. Reaching High often takes months. Recovery after a ban can take longer.

Starting over is not a shortcut. A new account has no trusted history, and the same risky connection or posting habits can cause the same problem again.

If a post has already been removed, do not repost it several times or argue in public. Send a short, polite modmail. Ask which rule applied and whether the moderators can approve the post or recognise the account as a real user.

That approval only applies inside their subreddit. It does not change your global CQS. There is no direct user appeal for the score itself; Reddit’s dedicated CQS feedback route is for moderators.

CQS for brands and managed Reddit accounts

A helpful brand reply has no value if it is removed before a customer sees it. Fresh campaign accounts often have little trust, which is why disposable burner strategies fail so often.

A better plan is to invest in a small number of established, verified accounts. Keep each one on a stable connection and use it like a real member of its communities. Learn the rules, answer useful questions and keep direct promotion to a small share of the account’s activity. Only add links when they truly help.

CQS cannot be bought, injected or manually assigned. Bought votes, farming and coordinated engagement can damage the account or lead to a ban.

What can transfer with an account is its existing history. An aged account with verification, clean use and authentic contributions has a stronger starting point than a fresh account. But that advantage can be lost. A sudden location change followed by a flood of promotional posts can quickly create trouble.

An established account is a head start built from history. It is not a way around Reddit’s systems.

Build trust, then keep it

Check your tier, secure the account, use a steady connection and avoid more removals. Build a record of useful contributions over weeks, not days.
