Assignment
We speak as people who manage Reddit accounts every day. The tone should feel calm, experienced and practical—not like Reddit documentation, an SEO article or a product pitch.
Target length: about 1,950 words. Treat the passage budgets below as ceilings, not targets. Closely related points should share words rather than become separate explanations.

Reddit CQS: How to Check Your Contributor Quality Score and Raise It

CQS on Reddit: What It Is, How to See Your Tier, and How to Raise It
The reader
Most readers have encountered CQS because something has gone wrong:
- A post says it was “Removed by Reddit’s filters.”
- Their comments disappear or remain held.
- They cannot send chats, follow users or get seen in a subreddit.
- Someone has told them to check their CQS.
- They received a Low or Lowest result and fear the account is ruined.
- They manage Reddit accounts for a brand or client and need to know whether the accounts can post reliably.
They usually understand karma but not this hidden reputation system. Their underlying concern is: “Does Reddit think I’m a bot, and can I recover?”
The page should steadily replace that uncertainty with a clear model:
- CQS is a hidden, account-wide trust tier.
- It is separate from karma and separate from a ban.
- The reader can check the tier through an AutoModerator response.
- Different symptoms can come from CQS, subreddit rules, rate limits or a shadowban.
- The score moves, but meaningful improvement takes weeks rather than days.
- Established account history is valuable; bought votes and artificial karma are liabilities.
By the end, the reader should know their likely problem and what to do this week.
Voice and posture
Write with the confidence of someone who has seen many accounts move through Reddit’s filters.
The voice is:
- Calm when the reader is alarmed.
- Direct without sounding blunt.
- Specific without pretending Reddit has published a formula.
- Sympathetic to someone blocked right now.
- Honest about uncertainty and timelines.
- Commercially aligned with our business, but never sales-led inside the guide.
Avoid melodrama about secret social-credit systems. Avoid calling every restriction a shadowban. Do not imply that a fresh account or purchased votes offer an easy fix.
Keep official facts and practical observations distinct:
- Use “Reddit says” for its three signal categories, regular updates, AutoModerator access and statements about alternate accounts.
- Use “users and moderators report” for timelines, VPN-related drops and the effects of clean activity.
- Qualify anything unconfirmed, such as possible effects on feed reach.
- Never invent numerical thresholds, scoring weights or guaranteed recovery times.
The prose should move naturally between short paragraphs, useful tables and compact steps. It should not read like a glossary or collection of disconnected answers.
The reading journey
Opening: explain CQS without a preamble
Budget ceiling: approximately 270 words
Begin with the answer. Do not open with a story, history lesson or generic introduction to Reddit.
The reader should quickly understand that Contributor Quality Score is Reddit’s hidden, account-wide assessment of how trustworthy an account appears. It uses past account actions, network and location information, and account-security signals. The result is one of five tiers, which moderators and Reddit’s reputation systems can use to filter posts and comments.
Make clear that users cannot see the score in their profile or settings. Most only learn it exists after a post is filtered.
Then separate CQS from karma. Karma is a visible result of votes; CQS is a hidden trust judgment informed by broader behaviour and security signals. High karma does not guarantee a good CQS, and a clean account with modest karma may have a stronger tier. Subreddit karma requirements and CQS filters are separate gates.
Give the reader an inline link to Reddit’s official Contributor Quality Score help article, while noting that it is primarily written for moderators.
Also establish three pieces of context without turning them into a history section:
- CQS is global to the account rather than calculated separately for every subreddit.
- A removal or ban in one community can therefore affect how the account is treated elsewhere.
- Reddit made CQS available to communities in September 2023, after testing it. Reddit reported fewer reversed removals than with simple karma and account-age gates, helping explain why large communities adopted it.
Keep this context brief. Its purpose is to explain why the reader encounters CQS so often.
Make the five tiers meaningful
Budget ceiling: approximately 205 words
Use a compact five-row text table, ordered from Lowest to Highest. The reader should be able to find the tier they received and immediately understand its practical effect.
Cover:
- Lowest: commonly held or removed where CQS filtering is active; treated as probable spam, but not banned.
- Low: often held for review or automatically removed.
- Moderate: the practical baseline that passes many common filters.
- High: trusted and seldom filtered.
- Highest: rarely affected by CQS filtering and potentially able to pass age or karma gates where moderators configure their rules that way.
Mention that new accounts generally begin in the low tiers and move according to their history and behaviour.
Follow the table with a short explanation of the threshold that matters. Reddit’s examples commonly filter accounts below Moderate or target Lowest accounts, sometimes alongside a subreddit-karma requirement. This makes Moderate the first practical goal and High the point at which an account is more likely to be left alone.
Each subreddit chooses how it uses the tiers. The same account may pass in one community and be held in another.
Help the reader check their own CQS
Budget ceiling: approximately 225 words
This section should feel immediately actionable.
Explain that Reddit does not provide a CQS meter in account settings. The closest thing to a direct readout from Reddit’s system is an AutoModerator response in a subreddit configured to return the tier.
Walk the reader naturally through checking:
- Go to r/WhatIsMyCQS.
- Read its current posting or command rules.
- Make the requested post.
- Read the automated response naming the account’s tier.
The reply normally arrives within moments. If it does not, the post may have failed the subreddit’s formatting rules. The checking community is not an official Reddit feature and may occasionally stop working, but its response uses the tier available to AutoModerator.
Then settle the third-party checker question. Reddit exposes CQS to AutoModerator, not to ordinary bots or the public API. A website that accepts a username cannot simply retrieve a private score. It must estimate from public signals or relay some form of subreddit-based check.
An estimate can be useful when looking at an account the reader does not control, but it remains an estimate. The AutoModerator result is the stronger readout. Reassure the reader that entering a public username does not reveal information beyond what the profile already exposes.
Diagnose what is actually blocking the account
Budget ceiling: approximately 295 words
Open by explaining what CQS can affect:
- Posts and comments in communities using CQS-based AutoModerator rules.
- Reddit’s reputation filter.
- Chat, message and community-invite limits tied to account reputation.
- Possibly how confidently Reddit distributes content in feeds, though Reddit has not fully documented this.
A low score restricts an account; it does not prevent browsing or voting, and it is not automatically a ban.
Use a clear diagnostic table with three columns: what the reader sees, what it usually means, and what to do.
Include these situations:
- “Removed by Reddit’s filters.” This usually points to the reputation filter, which is driven substantially by CQS. Communities can enable it at different levels. Reposting the same content is counterproductive because additional removals can reinforce the problem. The immediate options are moderator approval and improving the account.
- Chats, DMs or invites disappearing or reaching a limit. These may be account-reputation restrictions that loosen as the tier improves. There is no separate user appeal for them.
- Unable to follow people after following many accounts quickly. This is normally an action rate limit, not CQS. Waiting resolves the immediate block; stopping the mass-following behaviour prevents it from recurring.
- Nothing appears anywhere. If posts are invisible even when viewing the profile while logged out, with no ordinary removal messages, the reader may be dealing with a shadowban or suspension. Link to an appropriate shadowban check. A low CQS is different: some communities still work, while others hold or remove contributions.
The section should relieve the reader’s worst fear while giving each symptom the correct fix.
Explain what moves CQS and why an account may be low
Budget ceiling: approximately 405 words
Start with what is known. Reddit names three broad categories:
- Past actions taken on the account.
- Network and location signals.
- Account-security signals, such as verification.
Reddit does not publish the formula or the weight of each factor. It only says the score updates regularly and can move in either direction.
Then describe the patterns moderators and users have observed, clearly labelling them as observations rather than official scoring rules. Negative patterns include removals, reports, bans or suspensions, repeated downvoted comments, karma-farming communities, bursts of posts, repetitive links and highly concentrated activity in one community. Positive patterns include useful comments that receive upvotes and replies, normal activity across several relevant communities, and a secured, verified account.
Address whether Reddit judges the opinions or subjects someone posts about. Reddit has not said that particular viewpoints are scored. What can affect reputation is the response the content generates: removals, reports, downvotes and moderation actions.
Give the reader a recognisable list of reasons their score may be low:
- The account is new and has little clean history.
- Its email or phone is unverified.
- It has accumulated removals.
- Comments have repeatedly been downvoted or collapsed.
- It recently received a ban or site-wide suspension.
- It uses a VPN or a shared connection associated with abusive accounts.
- Its karma came largely from farming communities.
Age and total karma alone do not repair CQS. A dormant old account with a poor record can remain Low. A suspension can produce a sharp drop and usually requires a longer clean period afterward.
Give VPNs their own brief treatment. A VPN is not inherently prohibited, but shared exits used by spammers and rapid location changes resemble the patterns Reddit is trying to identify. A steady home or mobile connection is safer for an account that matters. If a drop followed heavy VPN use, the practical response is to stop using it for that account, behave normally and recheck after several weeks.
Settle the alternate-account question without fearmongering. Reddit has said alternate accounts are not automatically considered low quality. Problems arise when they are used for ban evasion, coordinated voting or repeated posting of the same links. Accounts sharing a connection can also become associated, so harmful behaviour on one may create risk for the others.
Give the reader a realistic improvement plan
Budget ceiling: approximately 360 words
This should be the most practically useful section, but not the longest. Present a compact sequence in a sensible order:
- Verify the email and add a real, non-VoIP phone number where appropriate. Security is among the signal categories Reddit acknowledges, making verification one of the fastest controllable changes.
- Stop using unstable VPNs or frequently changing locations. Keep the account on a clean, steady connection.
- Read each community’s rules before posting. Avoiding further removals matters more than creating more content.
- Comment more than posting at first. Helpful comments that earn genuine upvotes and replies build a healthier record.
- Stop bursts of posts, repeated links and mass following.
- Earn karma through ordinary participation, not farming communities or vote manipulation.
- Begin in larger general communities that allow newer accounts to comment. Sorting by New can make a useful comment easier to see.
- Participate across a handful of genuinely relevant communities rather than making the account look single-purpose.
- Prefer a few well-received contributions to large volumes of low-effort activity.
Keep the emphasis on weeks, not days. Reddit publishes no timeline. Accounts with verification, normal activity and no new removals may begin moving toward Moderate over several weeks; reaching High commonly takes months. Recovery after a ban may take longer.
Starting again is not a shortcut. A new account begins without trusted history, and accounts operated through the same risky setup may encounter the same problems. This is where the value of established, clean history should become apparent without turning the section into a pitch.
End with what to do about a post that has already been removed. The reader should not repeatedly repost it or argue publicly. A short, polite modmail can ask which rule applied and whether the moderators would approve the account as a known real user. Approval is limited to that subreddit and does not change the global score, so longer-term improvement is still necessary.
There is no direct user appeal for CQS itself. Reddit’s dedicated CQS feedback route is moderator-to-moderator.
Apply the lesson to brands and multi-account work
Budget ceiling: approximately 220 words
Shift naturally from the individual user to someone managing accounts for a business, client or campaign.
A low-tier brand account can have a genuinely helpful reply removed before a potential customer ever sees it. Fresh and disposable campaign accounts tend to begin with little trust, which is why one-off burner strategies fail.
Present the durable approach: invest in a small number of established, verified accounts, keep each on a stable connection and operate them as members of communities rather than ad placements. Learn each subreddit, contribute useful answers and keep direct promotion a small share of activity. Links should be occasional and contextually justified.
Then answer the buying question honestly.
CQS cannot be purchased, injected or manually assigned. Bought votes, farming activity and coordinated engagement are among the behaviours most likely to damage an account or get it banned.
What can transfer is the account’s existing record. An aged account with verification, clean history and authentic contributions begins from a stronger position than a fresh account. That advantage survives only if the account continues to be run carefully. A sudden location change followed by a burst of promotional posting can quickly undermine it.
The distinction should be clear: an established account is a head start built from history, not a way to bypass Reddit’s systems.
Close
Budget ceiling: 60 words
Finish with a compact recap: check the tier, secure the account, use a steady connection, avoid removals and build a record of genuinely useful contributions over weeks rather than days.
Then make one restrained offer. Readers who need an account ready to work from now can explore our established Reddit accounts and engagement services. Use one link and no more than one button.
Page shape
The finished page should contain:
- A direct opening rather than a conventional introduction.
- One table for the five tiers.
- Numbered checking steps.
- One diagnostic table for removals, messages, following and shadowbans.
- A concise improvement sequence.
- A brief brand and account-management application.
- One short commercial close.
Do not add a separate FAQ. Its remaining questions are already resolved more usefully in the main flow.
Do not add:
- AutoModerator code or instructions for moderators.
- A feature-history section.
- Reddit SEO or AI-search discussion.
- A debate about ban evasion.
- A long conclusion.
- Product promotion inside the educational passages.
- Claims that every aged account has a strong tier.
- Guaranteed recovery times or invented CQS thresholds.
The final experience should feel shorter and more useful than the ranking guides: every paragraph either explains the reader’s tier, diagnoses a symptom or helps the account move forward.
